Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the recent escalation in the Gulf region during a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to promoting regional peace and diplomacy.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Web Desk: The Iranian interior minister, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, met the prime minister in Islamabad to discuss bilateral relations and the evolving security situation in the region.
During the meeting, Shehbaz urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilise the Middle East.
“The region needs dialogue, de-escalation and diplomacy,” the prime minister said, reiterating that Pakistan would continue to play the role of an honest broker and sincere facilitator in efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.
According to an official statement, the prime minister reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to supporting peaceful solutions through dialogue and constructive engagement.
Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni praised the diplomatic efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, acknowledging their role in facilitating mediation efforts that resulted in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The Iranian minister also thanked Shehbaz Sharif for visiting Tehran to attend the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, describing the visit as a reflection of the close and longstanding ties between Pakistan and Iran.
The meeting underscored both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation while supporting initiatives aimed at maintaining peace, stability and dialogue across the region.
