Pakistan’s prime minister expresses support for the proposed Gaza peace agreement and calls for a credible political process leading to an independent Palestinian state.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — WEB DESK: Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the proposed Gaza peace framework, expressing hope that it will pave the way for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through a credible political process based on international law.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the prime minister praised the diplomatic efforts behind the proposed agreement and said Pakistan hopes all commitments made under the peace initiative will be implemented.
Pakistan Welcomes Mediation Efforts
Shehbaz Sharif commended the mediation role played by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, describing their efforts as instrumental in reaching the proposed framework.
He also referred to the initiative as a significant achievement for the Gaza Board of Peace, adding that it had been advanced under the leadership of Donald Trump.
Call for Palestinian Statehood
The prime minister said Pakistan expects concrete steps to ensure the implementation of all commitments contained in the proposed peace framework.
He reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position that a durable solution should lead to the establishment of an independent, sovereign and geographically contiguous Palestinian state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem (Al-Quds Al-Sharif) as its capital.
According to the statement, such a settlement should be achieved through a time-bound political process consistent with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Background
The remarks came after President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached regarding the disarmament of Hamas in Gaza, stating that Israeli forces would withdraw once the demilitarisation process was completed.
Trump described the arrangement as an important step toward establishing a new Palestinian administration in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Hamas said an agreement had been reached on the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces and issues related to weapons, while calling on mediators to ensure that Israel adheres to the terms of the deal.
