Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan Railways has announced an increase in train fares following a sharp rise in diesel prices across the country.
According to the railway headquarters, the fare adjustment comes after diesel prices increased by nearly 20 percent, significantly raising operational costs for the national rail network.
A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways said economy class fares for passenger trains have been increased by 5 percent, while air-conditioned (AC) class fares have been raised by 10 percent. In addition, freight train charges have been increased by 20 percent.
The railway authority stated that despite the adjustments, the organization will continue to absorb part of the operational cost burden to maintain passenger services.
The revised fares will come into effect from March 9 for all passenger and freight trains across the country. However, tickets that were booked before the announcement will not be subject to the new fare increase.
Railway officials said the adjustment was unavoidable after the surge in diesel prices, which plays a major role in the operating expenses of train services in Pakistan.
The decision comes as the government faces mounting pressure to manage rising energy costs and maintain transport services amid economic challenges.
