ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Web Desk: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa, discussing the escalating tensions in the Middle East and their broader global economic impact.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict involving Iran and Gulf countries, warning that the crisis could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy. They emphasized the urgent need for dialogue, diplomacy, and de-escalation.
The prime minister briefed Costa on Pakistan’s ongoing mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region. The European Council president welcomed these initiatives and reiterated the European Union’s support for diplomatic solutions to restore peace and stability.
Highlighting the importance of Pakistan–EU relations, Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening ties with the bloc. He also noted that his previously scheduled visit to Brussels had been postponed, expressing hope to reschedule soon.
Costa, in response, said he looked forward to welcoming the Pakistani premier in Brussels at mutually agreed dates.
The two leaders also underscored the significance of the GSP+ trade framework and upcoming economic cooperation, including the Pakistan–EU Business Forum scheduled to be held in Islamabad on April 28–29, 2026.
Separately, the European Council president stated that the EU remains seriously concerned about the global implications of the Iran conflict, stressing that only diplomacy and adherence to international law and the UN Charter can ensure lasting peace in the Middle East.
