ISLAMABAD – WEB DESK: The federal government has increased the petrol price by Rs1.20 per litre and reduced the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by 17 paisa per litre, with the revised rates taking effect on October 15, 2026.

Why have fuel prices changed?
The Petroleum Division cited movements in international petroleum prices, Platts benchmark rates, premiums and other incidental costs as factors behind the latest adjustment.
Pakistan relies heavily on imported petroleum products, making domestic fuel prices sensitive to changes in international oil markets, shipping expenses and geopolitical developments.
The latest adjustment follows a period of volatility in global energy markets amid continuing tensions in the Middle East. However, the official explanation for this particular revision focuses on changes in market rates and associated costs rather than identifying a single cause.
Pakistan’s daily fuel-pricing mechanism
The government introduced a daily fuel-price review mechanism in July 2026 amid fluctuations in international oil prices.
Under the revised arrangement, OGRA determines and publishes updated petroleum prices using the applicable pricing framework, including international market indicators. The mechanism is intended to allow domestic rates to reflect market movements more quickly than the previous weekly review system.
The change means that fuel prices can be adjusted frequently as market conditions evolve. Consumers should therefore distinguish between a rate announced for a specific date and the price applicable after a subsequent revision.
How the change affects consumers
The petrol increase adds Rs1.20 to the cost of every litre purchased at the revised rate. A customer buying 20 litres would pay Rs24 more than under the previous price.
For diesel users, the 17-paisa reduction translates into a saving of Rs1.70 on a 10-litre purchase compared with the previous rate.
Petrol is widely used by motorcycles, cars and smaller vehicles, while high-speed diesel is important for heavy transport, commercial vehicles and some industrial applications.
Changes in diesel prices can affect freight and distribution costs, although the impact on transport fares and retail prices depends on other operating expenses and whether businesses pass savings or increases on to customers.ase.
