New York, USA – Web Desk : Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and the resumption of negotiations to address rising regional tensions.
Addressing the UN Security Council’s 1737 Committee briefing on Iran, the Pakistani envoy urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation, emphasizing that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts are focused on stabilizing the region.
Ambassador Ahmad highlighted that last July, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2788, which underscores the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means. He stressed the need to reinvigorate the spirit of this resolution and the UN Charter to prevent the dangerous cycle of conflict that has repeatedly engulfed the region in recent years.
He also noted that the Council remains divided over matters concerning the 1737 Committee, and disagreements on appointing chairs to its subsidiary bodies have hampered the functioning of these institutions. Pakistan maintains that these issues should not obstruct the Committee’s routine work or the Council’s reporting process.
Regarding the current crisis, Ambassador Ahmad said that the situation, aggravated by unprovoked attacks on Iran, has deeply impacted diplomatic efforts on the country’s nuclear issue. He reaffirmed that despite recent challenges, the core principles and multilateral spirit that enabled the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the unanimous adoption of UN Resolution 2231 in 2015 remain vital.
Pakistan’s call comes amid heightened Middle East tensions, with global powers closely monitoring the evolving security and nuclear diplomacy landscape.
