Oil Prices Fall Over 1% Despite US-Iran Conflict as Traders Focus on Supply Flows

Date:

Higher crude shipments and expectations of continued exports outweighed geopolitical concerns, although markets remain volatile amid Middle East tensions.

LONDON, United Kingdom — WEB DESK: Global oil prices fell by more than 1% on Friday as traders shifted their attention from the ongoing US-Iran conflict to improving crude supply flows through key shipping routes, easing immediate fears of a major supply disruption.

Brent crude futures declined during trading before stabilising later in the session, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also traded lower. Despite the daily losses, both benchmark contracts remain on course for strong monthly gains, supported by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Supply Flows Ease Market Concerns

Market sentiment improved after shipping data indicated that crude oil movements through strategic maritime routes had increased despite the conflict.

While the Strait of Hormuz continues to face security risks, several very large crude carriers (VLCCs) successfully transited the waterway. Shipping activity through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait also remained relatively resilient, helping reduce fears of an immediate disruption to global oil supplies.

Middle East Risks Persist

Despite the decline in prices, analysts said geopolitical risks remain elevated.

Recent incidents, including reported tanker disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, continued drone attacks affecting maritime traffic near Egypt, and ongoing military tensions between the United States and Iran, have kept energy markets highly volatile.

Analysts expect oil prices to remain sensitive to developments in the Middle East, with any major disruption to shipping routes capable of triggering renewed price spikes.

Investors Monitor Diplomatic Efforts

Traders are also closely watching diplomatic contacts involving Iran and regional mediators over maritime security and the future management of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Although some improvement in shipping activity has eased short-term concerns, uncertainty surrounding the conflict continues to underpin market volatility.
