New Zealand Crush Sri Lanka, Pakistan in Trouble

Date:

Colombo, Sri Lanka – Web Desk: New Zealand national cricket team delivered a dominant performance in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka national cricket team by 61 runs in Colombo to significantly dent Pakistan national cricket team’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to field first. New Zealand posted a competitive total of 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Mitchell Santner led the charge with 47 runs, while McConchie contributed 31, helping the Black Caps build a solid platform.

In reply, Sri Lanka struggled under pressure and managed only 107 for 8 in 20 overs, falling well short of the target. The emphatic victory not only eliminated Sri Lanka from semi-final contention after back-to-back defeats but also improved New Zealand’s net run rate to +3.05.

Pakistan, meanwhile, remain in a difficult position with a net run rate of -0.46. The result has made their path to the last four considerably more complicated.

New Zealand will face England cricket team in their final Super 8 fixture on Friday, while Pakistan are set to play Sri Lanka on Saturday.

If New Zealand lose to England, Pakistan will retain a mathematical chance of qualifying. However, even in that scenario, Pakistan would need a comprehensive victory over Sri Lanka to overhaul the net run rate gap.

Should New Zealand defeat England, Pakistan will be eliminated from semi-final contention before their final match. England have already secured qualification for the semi-finals from the group.

The latest result has intensified the T20 World Cup semi-final race, with net run rate emerging as a decisive factor in the Super 8 stage.
