Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: A dramatic dispute involving threats between lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in the Sindh Assembly ended in reconciliation after intense political and procedural intervention, officials and party sources said.
MQM lawmaker Shaukat Rajput told the assembly that he had been threatened by a fellow party member, Sharjeel Jamal, during the session. Rajput claimed he was warned to “come outside and face consequences,” prompting him to seek police protection and demand the registration of a formal complaint.
He also warned that he would resign from the assembly if security was not provided, saying he would return to legal practice if forced out of politics.
Sindh Interior Minister Zia Lanjar described the situation as inappropriate for the assembly floor and urged the speaker to take action, while Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the issue reflected internal party divisions.
The speaker instructed the opposition leader to resolve the matter, warning that memberships could be suspended if the dispute persisted. During the heated session, MQM lawmaker Engineer Usman was suspended and barred from entering the assembly over alleged disruptive conduct until he submits an apology.
Police officials, including the relevant SSP and SHO, arrived at the assembly amid the confrontation. However, sources later confirmed that the dispute was resolved in the speaker’s chamber, with both lawmakers reconciling and police leaving the premises.
Party sources said Rajput is expected to formally pardon Sharjeel Jamal in the next session, and Engineer Usman’s suspension is also likely to be lifted.
