Lima, Peru – Web Desk: A Peruvian military helicopter carrying flood victims to safety has crashed, killing at least 15 people, including four crew members and 11 civilians.
The MI-17 helicopter, of Russian manufacture, departed from Pisco for a rescue operation in flood-affected regions when contact with the aircraft was lost. The Peruvian Air Force confirmed that the helicopter was engaged in an emergency relief mission when it went down.
The wreckage was discovered near Chala Town, Arequipa, approximately 300 kilometers from Pisco. Authorities reported that the helicopter was completely destroyed by fire, leaving only unidentifiable remains.
Heavy rains have triggered widespread flooding across Peru, causing massive damage to infrastructure and displacing thousands of residents. Earlier reports indicate nearly 10 deaths from flooding alone. The government had mobilized the military to assist in evacuation and relief operations for citizens trapped in floodwaters.
Rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
