Israeli Police Sergeant’s Remains Found 843 Days After Hamas Attack
Gaza City, Palestine – Web Desk: The remains of the last Israeli hostage from the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack have been recovered from Gaza, ending a grim chapter that lasted 843 days, Israeli authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to international news agencies, the remains of 24-year-old Israeli police Master Sergeant Ran Guvili were located in a Muslim cemetery in Gaza City and transported to Israel following forensic confirmation. Guvili was among the 251 people abducted during Hamas’ deadly cross-border assault on Israel in October 2023.
Israeli officials stated that the search operation was launched based on precise intelligence inputs, leading security forces to a cemetery in eastern Gaza City. After days of excavation and forensic examination, Guvili’s identity was confirmed through dental records, fingerprints, and additional forensic tests.
Israeli military sources said Guvili was wounded in the shoulder during the October 7 attack but still managed to don his uniform and ride a motorcycle to Kibbutz Alumim, where he reportedly fought Hamas militants for several hours before being killed. His body was later transferred into Gaza.
The Israeli army revealed that crucial information regarding the location of the remains was obtained during a joint intelligence operation, following the arrest and interrogation of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative. As a result, dozens of Israeli soldiers, forensic experts, and at least 20 dental specialists were deployed to excavate hundreds of graves in the cemetery.
Following confirmation, Israeli authorities said all other bodies exhumed during the search would be reburied respectfully, in accordance with international norms.
This development comes amid the October 2025 ceasefire agreement, which included provisions for the return of both living and deceased hostages. Hamas stated that the return of Guvili’s remains demonstrated its commitment to the ceasefire terms.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, stressed that the next phase would focus on the disarmament of Hamas and the complete demilitarization of Gaza.
Israeli sources also reported that, under the ceasefire framework, Israel is expected to hand over the remains of at least 15 Palestinian prisoners to Gaza’s Ministry of Health following the recovery of Guvili’s remains.
The recovery marks the conclusion of Israel’s hostage file from the October 7 attack, though the broader conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue to shape regional and international diplomacy.
