Historic move brings hope to Gaza Palestinians; limited travel resumes under EU monitoring
Gaza City, Palestine – Web Desk: After nearly 2.5 years of blockade, Israel has agreed to reopen the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt starting 1 February, bringing relief to nearly 2 million Palestinians.
The move comes under a US-mediated Gaza ceasefire agreement, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu working to implement the plan. The crossing will allow limited travel for Palestinians, such as those who had previously left Gaza or require medical treatment.
However, trade and aid shipments remain restricted due to security concerns. Passengers will undergo joint Israeli-Egyptian security checks, monitored by the European Union, while Gaza authorities warn that security issues may delay the official opening.
This step is a significant relief for Palestinians, who have faced shortages of food, medicine, and medical aid. Despite the ceasefire, fresh Israeli firing has reportedly caused casualties, highlighting the fragile peace efforts in Gaza.
