WANA, Pakistan — Web Desk: Religious scholar Mufti Jana Mir was killed in a bomb explosion in Wana, Lower South Waziristan, on Monday, with police saying initial findings indicate he was the intended target of the attack.
According to police, the blast occurred on the ground floor of a shopping plaza in Rustam Bazaar, where Mufti Jana Mir sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Security forces and police cordoned off the area immediately after the explosion, while bomb disposal and forensic teams began collecting evidence from the scene.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the nature of the attack and identify those responsible.
DSP Wana Circle Asghar Ali Shah said preliminary investigations suggest the explosive device had been planted in advance and that Mufti Jana Mir appeared to be the primary target.
No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication.
The incident comes just days after another attack in South Waziristan, where Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Ismail was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Azam Warsak Bazaar.
DSP Asghar Ali Shah confirmed that investigators were examining all aspects of the blast and said law enforcement agencies were working to trace those behind the attack.
Officials urged the public to remain calm while the investigation continues.
