Tehran, Iran – Web Desk: Iran is considering imposing a toll tax on international vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could have significant implications for global energy markets and maritime trade.
According to international media reports, Iranian lawmaker Somayeh Rafiei confirmed that the proposal is under serious review in parliament. Speaking at a public gathering in Tehran, she said Iran has full authority to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz and protect its national interests.
Rafiei added that Iran has reassessed the privileges previously extended to its rivals, which she said has created challenges for opposing countries adjusting to the new situation. She also expressed confidence that the ongoing conflict would ultimately result in a decisive outcome for Iran, potentially making transit through the strategic waterway more complex for adversaries.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments. Any restrictions, taxes, or disruptions could trigger volatility in global energy prices and impact international markets.
So far, there has been no official response from Western countries or Gulf states, although analysts warn that such a move could raise concerns under international maritime law, particularly principles governing freedom of navigation.
