Iran, US Begin High-Stakes Nuclear Talks in Geneva

Date:

Dubai – Web Desk: Iran and the United States have begun a new round of indirect nuclear negotiations in Geneva, raising hopes of diplomatic progress while regional tensions remain high.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has traveled to Geneva for the second round of talks, which are being mediated by Oman, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA. The previous round of discussions was held in Oman last week, marking the first structured engagement after months of stalled diplomacy.

Negotiations had previously been suspended following heightened regional tensions and a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel. The renewed talks come amid warnings from Washington and Tehran, with both sides maintaining firm positions on Iran’s nuclear program.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that force could be used to restrain Iran’s nuclear activities, while Tehran has vowed to retaliate against any military action. Gulf Arab states have also cautioned that any military escalation could trigger a broader regional conflict.

The United States maintains that Iran must halt uranium enrichment at all levels, while Iran insists it will not abandon what it describes as its peaceful nuclear program. Iranian officials have previously confirmed enrichment levels reaching up to 60%, which is considered close to weapons-grade material.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington remains focused on a diplomatic solution and confirmed that U.S. representatives are heading to Europe for the latest talks.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that any potential agreement must include the removal of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile from the country. Iran’s delegation is also expected to meet with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency during the visit.

Analysts say the Geneva talks represent a critical test for diplomacy amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
