Tehran demands evidence for British allegations linking Iran to a suspected airbase incident, while Iranian officials deny involvement and warn of consequences for bilateral relations.
TEHRAN, IRAN – WEB DESK: Iran has summoned British Ambassador Hugo Shorter over allegations by UK officials linking Tehran to a suspected plot involving RAF Fairford, a military airbase in England that has been used by US forces.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassador on Tuesday, October 13, to convey Tehran’s objection to the accusations and demand that Britain provide evidence supporting its claims.
According to Iran’s state-linked Tasnim news agency, Alireza Yousefi, an assistant foreign minister responsible for Western Europe, told the ambassador that London should provide documents substantiating the allegations. Iran warned that it could reconsider aspects of its bilateral relations with Britain if the dispute remained unresolved.
Tehran has denied involvement in the suspected incident and rejected the British accusations.
Britain Links Suspected Airbase Plot to Iran
The diplomatic dispute follows statements by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who said on October 12 that a suspected plot involving RAF Fairford was highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran and almost certainly directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The allegation represents a serious accusation against Tehran, but Iranian officials have denied responsibility and demanded supporting evidence.
The claims relate to a security incident near RAF Fairford on September 27. British police arrested five men in the vicinity of the base on suspicion of terrorism-related and explosives offences. They were subsequently released on bail.
Reuters reported that police found no explosives during the initial searches, although petrol was recovered from vehicles associated with the incident. The investigation has not established publicly that an attack was carried out.
Why RAF Fairford Matters
RAF Fairford, located in Gloucestershire in southwestern England, has served as an important operating location for US military aircraft.
The base has been used by American bombers involved in operations against Iran, making it strategically significant amid the wider tensions between Tehran and Western governments.
The suspected incident prompted heightened security attention and renewed scrutiny of possible threats to military installations.
British officials have raised concerns about alleged Iranian-linked activities abroad, while Tehran argues that the accusations against it require evidence and rejects the characterisation of its actions by Western governments.
Iran Demands Evidence From London
During the meeting with the British ambassador, Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on the UK government to provide documents supporting the allegations.
Tehran also criticised Britain’s broader approach to Iran and referred to the UK’s role in regional military developments. These statements reflect Iran’s official position and have not been independently established as factual conclusions.
The ambassador said he would convey Iran’s position to British officials, according to Tasnim.
The summons marks another diplomatic escalation between the two countries as British authorities investigate the suspected incident and officials exchange accusations over security threats.
Investigation and Diplomatic Relations
The central questions remain whether investigators can establish who was responsible for the suspected plot and whether evidence supports the British assessment of Iranian involvement.
The arrest of suspects does not itself establish guilt, and the allegations against Iran remain disputed. Any further conclusions will depend on investigative findings and evidence made public by the relevant authorities.
The diplomatic consequences will also depend on how London responds to Tehran’s demand and whether the two governments take additional measures.
For now, Iran has formally protested the allegations, demanded evidence and warned that the dispute could affect bilateral relations.
