Iran Signals Willingness for Nuclear Deal if U.S. Lifts Sanctions

Date:

Geneva – Web Desk: Iran has indicated it is open to negotiating a nuclear deal with the United States, provided Washington is willing to discuss lifting economic sanctions. The second round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks is scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi told a British broadcaster that Tehran is prepared to consider certain compromises on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of economic sanctions. However, he stressed that Iran opposes linking missile development or other unrelated matters to the nuclear negotiations.

Earlier indirect talks took place in Oman, with Omani officials acting as mediators between the two countries. Takht-Ravanchi described the preliminary discussions as positive but cautioned that it is too early to predict a final outcome.

Separately, the head of Iran’s nuclear agency suggested the country might agree to reduce its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to lower levels, contingent on the complete lifting of all financial sanctions.

The United States has consistently demanded that Iran curb uranium enrichment on its soil, while Tehran has rejected fully halting enrichment and denies pursuing nuclear weapons.

This follows the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), regarded as a key foreign policy achievement of the Obama administration, which the Trump administration withdrew from during its first term. Under the JCPOA, Iran had agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
