TEHRAN – Web Desk: Iran has said that negotiations with Oman on new arrangements for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have entered their final stage, while positive signals have also been received from the United States indicating its readiness to honor previous commitments.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Iranian media that the proposed Iran-Oman understanding would establish new procedures for maritime traffic in the Strait, though this does not mean the waterway will be fully opened. He said the proposed system would differ from the arrangement in place for decades, with a significant portion of commercial shipping routes passing through Iranian maritime boundaries.
Gharibabadi said the decision on whether to charge transit fees would be made based on Iranian leadership policy and the United States’ future conduct. He added that Washington has sent signals indicating it is prepared to adhere to its previous commitments.
According to reports, if the Iran-Oman administrative understanding is finalized, a significant agreement between Iran and the US could follow in the coming days.
