BERLIN – Web Desk: Security has been placed on high alert at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany after an explosive-laden drone was discovered near the runway by security personnel, according to media reports.
The drone was found in a restricted cargo area. A bomb disposal team rendered it safe, and flights were temporarily suspended or diverted to other airports while investigations were conducted.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a “new level of threat,” adding that investigators are also examining the possibility of a hybrid attack. No group or country has yet been officially blamed for the incident.
Separately, a DHL cargo aircraft struck an unknown object after being diverted, suffering minor damage. Authorities are investigating whether the two incidents may be linked.
