Iran Protests to UN Over US Seizure of Ships, Calls It ‘Piracy’

Date:

United Nations – Web Desk: Iran has formally protested to the United Nations over the US Navy’s seizure of Iranian ships, demanding an immediate end to what it calls “maritime piracy” in international waters.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Iran’s Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani described the US naval blockade as illegal interference in international trade and unlawful seizure of property.

“The American approach constitutes maritime piracy and aggression against Iran’s sovereign rights,” the ambassador wrote. He added that Iran reserves the right to respond to US actions.

The protest comes as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) continues a naval blockade in the Arabian Sea. According to CENTCOM, a vessel named Blue Star Three was recently intercepted and searched on suspicion of heading toward an Iranian port. So far, 39 ships have been forced to change course, US officials said.

On Tuesday, CENTCOM had claimed that more than 20 ships remain stranded at Iran’s Chabahar port due to the blockade, severely crippling Tehran’s commercial activities.

Meanwhile, Iranian military spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said that despite the ceasefire with the United States, Iran does not consider the war to be over. “Iranian forces are maintaining readiness and updating lists of targets,” he warned.

The US has not officially responded to Iran’s UN protest. The Security Council has yet to schedule a meeting to discuss the complaint.

Analysts say the escalating naval confrontation in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman risks a wider conflict, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain the temporary ceasefire.
