GENEVA, Switzerland – Web Desk: Iran has strongly condemned an alleged airstrike on a school in the southern city of Minab, calling it a serious violation of international law, while the United Nations human rights chief described the incident as a “visceral horror.”
Addressing an emergency session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States and Israel of carrying out the attack, describing the broader conflict as an “illegal” and “brutal war of aggression.”
The emergency session was convened at the request of Iran, China, and Cuba following reports that the strike on a girls’ elementary school in Minab killed at least 175 students and teachers. The casualty figures have not been independently verified.
Araghchi said the incident occurred despite ongoing diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear programme, accusing the United States of “betraying diplomacy.”
Iran urged the council to take urgent action, warning that failure to respond would undermine international accountability and legal norms.
The United States and Israel have not immediately responded to the allegations.
UN Reaction
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told the council that the reported bombing of the school “evoked a visceral horror.”
He called for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation into the incident. “There must be justice for the terrible harm done,” he said, adding that any inquiry should be conducted thoroughly and its findings made public.
Analysts say the incident, if confirmed, could further intensify international scrutiny over the conflict and deepen calls for accountability under international humanitarian law.
