Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says its air defence system intercepted and destroyed an MQ-1 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Sirik.
WEB DESK: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it intercepted and destroyed an MQ-1 unmanned aerial vehicle east of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media reports published Thursday.
The reported incident occurred off the coast of Sirik in Iran’s Hormozgan province, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency, which cited the IRGC.
The force said its aerospace defence system carried out the interception under Iran’s integrated air defence network.
Iran Claims Another MQ-1 Drone Interception
According to the IRGC statement carried by Iranian media, the drone was the 14th MQ-1 aircraft that Iran’s air defence system claimed to have intercepted and destroyed.
The MQ-1 is a US-designed unmanned aerial vehicle. However, identifying an aircraft as US-made does not, by itself, establish which military or agency was operating it during the reported incident.
Where Did the Incident Occur?
Iranian media placed the reported interception east of the Strait of Hormuz, opposite the coastal area of Sirik in Hormozgan province.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It is a major route for international oil and gas shipments, making security developments in the surrounding waters significant for regional stability and global energy markets.
The precise flight path of the drone, its mission and the circumstances leading to the reported interception have not been independently confirmed.
Iran-US Military Tensions
The announcement comes amid heightened military tensions between Iran and the United States.
Iranian forces have made previous claims about intercepting US drones in the region. Such announcements need to be assessed individually because the aircraft involved, the reported locations and the available evidence can differ between incidents.
