Indian Woman Climbs 100-Foot Tower to Marry Lover via Online Nikah

Date:

The woman in Uttar Pradesh spent several hours atop a mobile phone tower before her family agreed to a marriage ceremony conducted remotely with her partner in Mumbai.

A woman in India’s Uttar Pradesh climbed a mobile phone tower nearly 100 feet high to press for marriage to her partner, eventually coming down after their nikah was solemnised over a video call, according to Indian media reports.

The incident took place in Bahraich district, where the woman climbed the tower following a reported disagreement with her family over her relationship with Nooruddin, 21, who was working in Mumbai at the time.

According to report, which cited Indian media reports, the woman was identified as Mehak, also known as Sahiba Begum, and was 19 years old. Other reports have used a different name and age, so those details remain inconsistently reported.

Why Did the Woman Climb the Tower?

The incident reportedly followed a disagreement between the woman and her family over her relationship and wish to marry Nooruddin.

According to Hindustan Times, both families had initially opposed the marriage. The woman climbed the mobile phone tower in Chaudhary village, within the Motipur police station area of Bahraich district.

She remained on the tower for several hours as relatives, villagers and police personnel attempted to persuade her to descend safely. Reports differ slightly on the duration, placing it at approximately four to five hours.

The incident attracted a crowd and prompted a police response.

Online Nikah Brings the Standoff to an End

Efforts to resolve the situation eventually led to contact with Nooruddin, who was in Mumbai.

According to reports, a local Muslim cleric conducted the couple’s nikah remotely over a video call, with Nooruddin participating from the city where he was working.

Following the ceremony, the woman agreed to come down from the tower. Female police personnel helped her descend safely, bringing the immediate standoff to an end.

The reported outcome ended the immediate confrontation, although the incident had raised concerns about the risks involved in the woman’s actions.

Police Respond to the Incident

Police personnel reached the location after receiving information about the woman on the tower.

Officers and local residents reportedly tried to persuade her to come down without injury while efforts continued to contact her partner and resolve the disagreement.

Police later took the woman and her family to the station for counselling before she returned home with her mother.

A Family Dispute With a Dangerous Outcome

The episode highlights the difficulties that can arise when a person’s wish to marry conflicts with family opposition.

However, climbing a mobile phone tower can expose someone to serious risks, including falls and electrical hazards. The fact that the standoff ended safely does not make such actions safe or advisable.
