Indonesia Threatens Exit From Peace Board if Palestinians Not Benefited

Date:

Jakarta, Indonesia – Web Desk: President Prabowo Subianto has stated that Indonesia will withdraw from the so-called “Board of Peace” initiated by Donald Trump if the platform fails to advance Palestinian and Indonesian interests, according to a government statement.

Indonesia’s participation in the board and its decision to contribute personnel to a proposed stabilization force in Gaza have drawn criticism from local experts and Islamic organizations, who argue that involvement in the initiative could weaken Jakarta’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause.

During a meeting with religious leaders, Prabowo reiterated that Indonesia’s engagement in the peace mechanism is conditional. Hanif Alatas of the Islamic Brotherhood Front was quoted as saying the president would exit the board if it ceased to benefit Palestine or align with national interests.

“If there is no longer any benefit for Palestine and it is not in line with Indonesia’s national interests, he will withdraw,” Alatas said.

The Indonesian Ulema Council, a prominent religious authority, previously urged Indonesia to step away from the initiative, citing concerns over the United States’ role in the ongoing conflict involving Iran and broader Middle Eastern tensions.

By contrast, Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, suggested the peace board could serve as a platform to encourage de-escalation and dialogue.

“Indonesia could declare that the agenda is on hold until talks on de-escalation and peace from the American-Israeli war against Iran,” the group’s chief, Yahya Cholil Staquf, said in a statement.

Indonesia’s foreign ministry has previously noted that all discussions under the board have been suspended due to the ongoing conflict.

The debate highlights domestic divisions over Jakarta’s role in international peace initiatives and its approach to the Middle East crisis. While the government seeks to maintain diplomatic engagement, critics argue that participation must not compromise Indonesia’s support for Palestinian self-determination.

Officials emphasized that Indonesia’s involvement remains conditional and subject to review based on tangible benefits for peace and national interests.
