Karachi Faces Intense Heat as Thunderstorms, Rain Expected Today

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Karachi is expected to remain in the grip of intense heat on Monday, September 14, with thunderstorms and rain possible in parts of the city during the afternoon.

According to a weather assessment cited by Express Urdu, the city’s maximum temperature could reach between 38°C and 40°C, while the heat index in different areas may feel considerably higher, potentially ranging between 42°C and 48°C.

Thunderclouds are expected to begin developing over Karachi’s outskirts after around 12pm to 1pm, as converging winds near the city create conditions favourable for localized thunderstorms.

Areas that could experience thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall include Bahria Town, DHA City, Gadap, Bejar, Dumba Goth, Scheme 33, Malir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Port Qasim and Steel Town, along with surrounding localities.

Other parts of Karachi have been given a reported 45% to 60% chance of light to moderate rainfall. However, rainfall activity in central parts of the metropolis may remain limited because the prevailing monsoon system is relatively weak, according to the report.

The report added that intense daytime heating could also contribute to the local development of thunderclouds. No major spell of severe rainfall has currently been forecast for Karachi.

Separately, an earlier forecast citing the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said Karachi could experience thunderstorm activity and light rain between September 14 and 16, with occasional breaks. The wider weather system was linked to a monsoon low over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.

Residents should therefore remain prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, particularly during the afternoon, while also taking precautions against prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
