India Boosts Defense Budget by 15% Following Pakistan Tensions

Date:

$85.4B allocated for modern weapons, technology, and stronger military systems

New Delhi, India | Web Desk: India has increased its defense budget by 15% following military tensions with Pakistan in May, allocating $85.4 billion for the fiscal year 2026-27. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha, emphasizes modern technology acquisition, weapons, and defense systems enhancement.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the increased allocation aims to streamline procurement processes, improve resource utilization, and strengthen the armed forces. Spending on weapons and defense equipment has risen by 21.84%, while additional funds have been earmarked for operational costs, fuel, maintenance, and salaries.

The budget comes after escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by an incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and India’s subsequent claims of targeting militant hideouts in Pakistan through Operation Sandor.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the budget, noting it will enhance India’s defense capabilities. However, experts caution that inflation and currency depreciation may limit the practical impact of the 15% increase.
