Karachi rescue teams recover more remains; demolition recommended for safety
Rescue operations at Gul Plaza, Karachi, continue on the sixth day after the devastating fire, as authorities recovered the remains of two more victims, bringing the death toll to 62. Teams are also removing debris, including 16 motorcycles from the rooftop, while search efforts proceed with assistance from the local association.
The Sindh Building Control Authority and Pakistan Engineering Council have declared the plaza structurally unsafe and recommended its demolition once rescue operations conclude. Gul Plaza, spanning 8,124 yards and housing 1,102 shops, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday night, with adjacent plazas also inspected for safety.
Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, visited the homes of affected families to express condolences and announced support for the rehabilitation of victims’ businesses. He emphasized that the administration will continue efforts until all families are fully assisted. Rescue teams remain active at the site to ensure victims’ remains are returned to their families promptly, while investigations and safety assessments continue.
The tragedy has highlighted ongoing challenges in fire safety and urban structural oversight in Karachi.
