Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Political dialogue between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been restored, with both sides expressing willingness to move towards broader consensus on key national issues, including a possible Charter of Democracy, according to parliamentary sources.
A high-level meeting was held on the directives of the Prime Minister between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and an opposition delegation led by Asad Qaiser. The meeting discussed in detail matters related to the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, former FATA and PATA regions, the federal budget, and proposed taxation on tobacco products.
Government representatives, including Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah and Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, participated in the talks. The opposition delegation raised concerns over taxation policies in merged tribal districts and proposed levies on tobacco.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Asad Qaiser said the PTI has conveyed that no new taxes should be imposed in the former FATA region. He added that while formal political negotiations were not held in detail, the party is ready for a Charter of Democracy to strengthen democratic institutions.
Rana Sanaullah stated that the government has formally offered political dialogue to PTI, which has responded positively. He said all major issues in a parliamentary democracy can be resolved through consultation and negotiations.
He further said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer of a Charter for Stability in Pakistan remains on the table, and the government is open to talks at all levels. The Finance Minister also assured that concerns regarding taxes in FATA and PATA would be discussed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and addressed accordingly.
