Iran’s Ghalibaf says neighbours sent messages on new regional security arrangements

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says the messages also discussed establishing a framework for regional economic cooperation.

WEB DESK: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has said Iran has received multiple messages from neighbouring countries regarding new regional security arrangements.

According to Ghalibaf, the messages also included discussions on establishing a framework for regional economic cooperation.

Ghalibaf highlights regional security

In a statement, Ghalibaf said neighbouring countries were discussing new approaches to security in the region amid growing geopolitical tensions.

He argued that regional countries should work towards developing a security framework based on cooperation among states rather than relying on external powers.

Ghalibaf said a system developed independently by countries in the region could provide a more sustainable basis for peace and stability.

Criticism of US policies

The Iranian parliament speaker also criticised US policy in the region, saying American pressure had put the security of its allies at risk.

Ghalibaf accused Washington of prioritising Israel’s interests while overlooking the interests of its regional allies.

He claimed that US actions had caused some allied countries to feel increasingly concerned about their own security and survival.

Economic cooperation also discussed

According to Ghalibaf, the messages received from neighbouring countries were not limited to security issues.

He said the communications also addressed the possibility of developing regional economic cooperation.

The comments come as Middle Eastern countries reassess their security and economic priorities amid heightened regional tensions.

Greater economic cooperation between neighbouring countries could potentially complement emerging discussions over a broader regional security framework.

Details of proposed arrangements remain unclear

Ghalibaf did not identify the countries that had sent the messages or provide specific details about the proposed security arrangements.

It also remains unclear whether the discussions have progressed towards any formal agreement or institutional framework.

Further details could emerge as regional governments issue their own statements on security and economic cooperation.
