Fraud alerts issued over fake Hormuz shipping clearance fees

Date:

(Web Desk: Athens, Greece) A maritime security firm has warned shipping companies of fraudulent messages demanding cryptocurrency payments in exchange for “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a Greece-based maritime security company, several shipping operators have received fake communications from unidentified individuals posing as Iranian officials. The messages reportedly request fees in Bitcoin, claiming vessels will be allowed to transit the strategic waterway without disruption after payment.

The firm stressed that these communications are scams and have no connection to any official Iranian authority.

It urged shipping companies to exercise caution, verify all communications through official channels, and avoid making any unauthorized payments.

The warning comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for global oil shipments and maritime trade.

Security experts have advised shipping firms to strengthen cyber vigilance and coordinate closely with international maritime authorities to prevent financial fraud and operational risks.
