France Test-Fires M51.3 Nuclear-Capable Missile From Submarine

PARIS, FRANCE — WEB DESK: France successfully carried out its first submarine launch of the new M51.3 nuclear-capable strategic ballistic missile on Tuesday, marking another major step in the modernisation of the country’s sea-based nuclear deterrent.

The missile was launched from the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Le Vigilant off the coast of Finistère in Brittany.

The M51.3 carried no nuclear warhead during the operation.

The missile travelled into the North Atlantic, with its designated impact area located several hundred kilometres from any coastline.

French President Emmanuel Macron observed the test from a French naval vessel.

The launch was conducted as part of an operation designed to validate Le Vigilant’s ability to deploy the M51 system following a scheduled period of maintenance and repairs.

French defence authorities monitored the missile throughout its flight using the country’s weapons-testing infrastructure, including the Monge missile tracking and measurement vessel.

France said the test was conducted without a nuclear payload and in compliance with its international commitments.

The M51.3 is the third major version of France’s M51 submarine-launched strategic ballistic missile.

It entered operational service on October 24, 2025, as part of a wider programme to modernise the ocean-based component of France’s nuclear deterrent.

French defence authorities say the M51.3 offers improvements in range, accuracy and the ability to penetrate increasingly sophisticated missile defence systems.

The missile is designed to carry France’s newer TNO-2 oceanic nuclear warheads during operational nuclear deployment, although Tuesday’s test vehicle was unarmed.

Development of the M51.3 began in 2014, while an earlier qualification launch of the missile was successfully conducted from a land-based test facility in November 2023.

Tuesday’s operation therefore represented the first M51.3 launch from a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, rather than the first-ever flight test of the missile variant.

The launch comes as France continues a broader modernisation of its strategic nuclear forces amid heightened security concerns in Europe.

Macron has increasingly emphasised the role of France’s independent nuclear deterrent in European security as governments reassess defence policies in response to evolving strategic threats.

France is also already working on the next version of the missile, the M51.4, which is expected to enter service during the next decade.

The latest test validates a key operational component of France’s submarine-based deterrent while demonstrating the continued modernisation of its strategic weapons systems.
