Web Desk: A group of former Israeli generals and senior security officials has warned that escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank poses a serious threat to Israel, with some arguing that the situation is more concerning for the country than threats from Iran or the Gaza conflict.
According to a New York Times report, retired Major General Eyal Ben-Reuven said after visiting Palestinian communities in the West Bank that settler actions had become what he viewed as the “real threat” to Israel.
Ben-Reuven, who previously commanded an Israeli army division in the West Bank, said the situation was more concerning to him than Iran, Gaza or Lebanon.
Other former senior Israeli military and security officials who visited the area reportedly expressed similar concerns over the violence and its implications for Israeli society.
Former officials raise concerns over settler violence
The former officials have accused Israeli settlers of carrying out attacks against Palestinian communities, including raids and arson targeting homes, mosques and villages.
The New York Times reported that the former officials view the growing lawlessness in the West Bank as a threat to Israel’s democratic institutions and long-term security.
Some former officials have described the violence as “Jewish terrorism” or ethnic cleansing, while arguing that the Israeli government has provided political support to settlers or failed to take sufficient action against the violence.

UN reports rising displacement in West Bank
The United Nations has also documented a sharp deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the occupied West Bank.
In a September 2 briefing, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said more than 3,700 Palestinians had been displaced across the West Bank since the beginning of 2026 because of demolitions, settler violence and access restrictions.
OCHA also reported that 23 Palestinians had been killed and more than 1,040 injured in the context of settler attacks during the year.
The UN has separately documented thousands of settler-related incidents involving casualties, property damage or both, highlighting the growing impact of violence on Palestinian communities.
Violence raises wider security concerns
The former Israeli officials argue that continued settler violence and the erosion of law enforcement could damage Israel’s democratic institutions and create deeper instability.
The issue has also drawn growing international attention as Palestinian communities face displacement, restrictions on movement and damage to homes and agricultural property.
The UN has called for civilians to be protected and for humanitarian access to be maintained amid the deteriorating situation across the occupied Palestinian territory.
The debate over settler violence comes as tensions remain high across the West Bank and the wider Middle East, with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continuing to shape regional security concerns.
