Former Iranian Diplomat Says US Trapped by Hormuz Crisis

Date:

Abbas Khamyar says Washington has failed to achieve its objectives through economic and military pressure and needs meaningful talks with Tehran.

TEHRAN, IRAN — WEB DESK: Former Iranian diplomat Abbas Khamyar has claimed that the United States has failed to achieve its objectives through economic and military pressure on Iran and has instead become caught in a difficult strategic situation over the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Khamyar said Washington had not succeeded in its campaign of economic and military pressure against Tehran and argued that Iran was unwilling to accept US conditions or demands.

Hormuz described as Iran’s strategic card

Khamyar described the Strait of Hormuz as an important defensive and diplomatic instrument for Iran.

According to the former diplomat, the strategic waterway has emerged as a form of deterrence that has influenced the direction of military operations in the region and contributed to a reassessment of the rules governing the confrontation.

He argued that the situation surrounding the waterway had not developed as Washington may have expected, leaving the United States facing a more complicated strategic challenge.

Iran calls for meaningful negotiations

Khamyar also criticised Washington’s previous commitments, claiming that the United States had violated some of its earlier promises and obligations.

He said any future progress would therefore require serious and meaningful negotiations between the two sides.

According to Khamyar, Tehran’s preference is not to accept pressure or predetermined US conditions but to enter negotiations in which both sides can discuss their positions and responsibilities in good faith.

US-Iran tensions remain focused on Hormuz

The former diplomat further claimed that Washington initially viewed the Strait of Hormuz as a potential source of pressure against Iran during the conflict.

He argued that the situation had developed in the opposite direction, with the United States now facing the complexities created by the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important energy corridors. A significant volume of global oil and other energy products passes through the waterway, making any major disruption a potential threat to international energy markets.

Why the Strait matters to global markets

The strategic importance of Hormuz extends well beyond Iran and the United States.

Any prolonged disruption or military confrontation in the waterway could affect shipping routes, insurance costs and energy supplies, potentially putting upward pressure on oil prices.

For this reason, developments around the Strait have remained closely watched by governments, energy companies and financial markets as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue.
