ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) —-The federal cabinet has approved the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment during a special session held on Friday (Today).
Federal cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif through a video link from Baku, included key ministers, Khawaja Asif, Bilal Azhar Kayani, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Aurangzeb Khichi, Rana Mubashir, Aun Chaudhry, Dr. Shazra Mansab, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, and Malik Rasheed Ahmed. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan was present at the Prime Minister’s Office.
During the meeting, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar briefed the cabinet on the draft amendment, while the cabinet also reviewed proposals submitted by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Addressing the media after the meeting, the law minister announced that the bill will be presented in the Senate today as part of the supplementary agenda. The draft, he said, consists of 48 clauses. One of the key features includes the establishment of a Constitutional Court, a proposal originally included in the Charter of Democracy. The bill also suggests that the transfer of judges be placed under the authority of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, following recent concerns raised over judicial transfers.
According to sources, the PPP has supported three out of eight government proposals, including those related to the command of the armed forces, creation of constitutional courts, and judges’ transfers. However, disagreements remain over issues such as the NFC Award, appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, judicial powers of executive magistrates, dual nationality of bureaucrats, and the transfer of certain ministries back to the federation.
