Web Desk – May 16, 2026: Africa’s public health agency has confirmed a new Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases recorded so far in the province of Ituri.
According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, health officials are now investigating whether the outbreak involves Ebola Zaire – the deadliest strain of the virus.
Neighboring Uganda has also confirmed one Ebola-related death, raising regional alarm. The outbreak is concentrated in the eastern Congo health zones of Mungwalu and Rwampara – an area located close to the borders of both Uganda and South Sudan.
Authorities have warned that the outbreak could spread across borders, prompting heightened surveillance and preparedness measures in neighboring countries.
