Drone Strikes Kill at Least 10, Injure Over 60 in Sudan’s El-Obeid
EL-OBEID, SUDAN — WEB DESK: At least 10 people have been killed and more than 60 wounded in drone attacks targeting a university dormitory and a shelter housing displaced families in Sudan’s El-Obeid, as fighting intensifies across North Kordofan.
The first attack struck accommodation at the University of Kordofan being used by students and civilians.
Five people were killed and 47 others wounded in the university strike.
A second drone attack hit a centre sheltering families displaced by Sudan’s continuing conflict the following day, leaving another five people dead and 13 wounded.
North Kordofan authorities blamed the second attack on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The RSF had not immediately responded to the accusation, and responsibility for the attacks has not been independently established.
The violence comes as El-Obeid faces growing pressure from fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF over control of strategically important territory in North Kordofan.
A separate drone strike on the Al Mina Al Bari displacement shelter in El-Obeid also killed a boy and injured 12 other children, including five boys and seven girls.
UNICEF condemned the attack, warning that children displaced by the conflict were being exposed to violence even at locations where they had sought safety.
More than 400 children were reportedly killed or injured across Sudan between January and September 2026, with drone attacks responsible for a significant share of the casualties.
El-Obeid has faced repeated drone attacks during the conflict, with civilian infrastructure, hospitals, schools, power facilities and displacement centres affected.
The latest violence has heightened concerns over civilian safety as military operations intensify across the Kordofan region.
Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF.
The conflict has since triggered a severe humanitarian and displacement crisis, leaving civilians facing violence, hunger and disruption to essential services.
The latest attacks underline the growing danger posed by drone warfare as fighting moves through populated areas and sites sheltering people displaced by the conflict.
