Guadalajara, Mexico – Web Desk: Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo in a crucial group-stage encounter in Guadalajara.
The South American side dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities from the opening whistle but struggled to break down a resilient DR Congo defense.
Daniel Muñoz came close to opening the scoring in the fourth minute, while another effort shortly afterward was ruled out for offside. Despite Colombia’s attacking pressure, DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivered an impressive first-half performance, making a series of crucial saves to keep the match level.
Colombia continued to dictate play after the break, with star forward Luis Díaz and his teammates creating multiple chances. However, DR Congo remained organized defensively and looked set to frustrate their opponents.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute when Daniel Muñoz’s shot took a deflection off a DR Congo defender and found the back of the net, handing Colombia a deserved lead.
The victory moves Colombia to the top of the group and guarantees qualification for the knockout stage. Meanwhile, DR Congo must defeat Uzbekistan in their final group match to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
