Don Lemon detained after church protest against Trump’s immigration crackdown
Washington, United States | Web Desk: Former CNN anchor and prominent US media personality Don Lemon has been arrested in connection with a protest against former President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration policy, sparking debate over free speech and protest rights in the US.
According to international media reports, Don Lemon was taken into custody in Los Angeles over his alleged involvement in a protest held on January 18 outside a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, confirmed that Lemon was arrested while he was in Los Angeles covering the Grammy Awards.
The attorney said it is still unclear under which specific charges or legal provisions the case has been registered. The US Department of Justice had earlier stated that legal action could be taken against participants of the January 18 protest, alleging that demonstrators disrupted church services and attempted vandalism.
Don Lemon’s legal team argued that he has been associated with journalism for more than three decades and maintained that his participation in the protest fell within his constitutional rights as a citizen.
The arrest comes amid nationwide protests across the United States against Trump’s immigration enforcement measures, during which at least three unarmed civilians have reportedly been killed in raid operations carried out by authorities.
