DUBAI – Web Desk: A cargo ship was struck by an unidentified missile near the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, prompting an investigation by maritime authorities, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Oman’s Khasab, the UK agency said in a statement. The affected vessel reported being struck by an “unidentified projectile.” The name of the ship was not disclosed, and it was not immediately clear whether the attack caused damage or casualties.
Authorities are investigating the nature of the projectile and those responsible. The incident comes amid heightened global concern over security in the Strait of Hormuz and other Gulf shipping routes, following several maritime incidents and military tensions in recent weeks.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments pass. Any disruption to the waterway can directly impact global trade, energy markets, and maritime security.
