Brief Rain Brings Relief to Karachi as Monsoon Effects Linger
KARACHI, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Brief showers swept across several neighbourhoods of Karachi, bringing temporary relief from hot conditions as lingering monsoon effects continued to influence weather in Pakistan’s largest city.
Rain was reported in Ayesha Manzil, Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Scheme 33, Federal B Area and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, while parts of Karachi’s Old City received light drizzle, according to initial reports.
Although the showers were short-lived, residents in affected neighbourhoods reported a noticeable drop in temperature after the rainfall.
Which Areas of Karachi Received Rain?
The rainfall was scattered rather than uniform across the metropolis.
Among the areas reporting showers were:

Conditions varied considerably from one neighbourhood to another, with some areas receiving rain while others experienced only drizzle or cloudy conditions.
The scattered nature of the showers is consistent with the localized weather activity Karachi often experiences when residual moisture remains in the atmosphere.
Rain Offers Temporary Temperature Relief
Karachi had been experiencing warm and humid September conditions before the showers.
Pakistan Meteorological Department-linked observations for September 16 recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8°C in Karachi, with a minimum of 28°C and relative humidity of around 70% in the available observation. Only trace rainfall was recorded at the observing station, illustrating how rainfall can vary sharply across different parts of the city.
The showers therefore provided welcome but temporary relief in affected neighbourhoods rather than indicating widespread heavy rainfall across Karachi.
PMD Had Forecast Light Rain for Karachi
The rainfall was broadly consistent with the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s earlier forecast.
PMD had forecast chances of thunderstorms and light rain in Karachi between September 14 and 16, as a weather system affected different parts of Pakistan.
Earlier official forecasts also identified Karachi among Sindh areas where scattered rain and thunderstorms could occur as moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal interacted with a westerly weather system.
The latest showers therefore appear consistent with the tail end of that weather pattern.
Monsoon Influence Weakening Around Karachi
The latest official outlook suggests that the stronger rainfall focus is shifting away from Karachi.
The Flood Forecasting Division’s September 16 bulletin forecast scattered to widespread rain and thunderstorms over parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and eastern Balochistan through September 18. In Sindh, the 48-hour outlook specifically highlighted Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sujawal, Tharparkar and Umerkot, rather than Karachi.
That indicates the city’s latest showers should not automatically be interpreted as the start of another major spell of widespread Karachi rainfall.
What Karachi Can Expect Next
Available PMD-linked forecast data points toward a return to predominantly warmer conditions after the brief respite.
The Karachi weather display published through the Flood Forecasting Division showed partly cloudy conditions in the near-term forecast, followed by warmer and clearer weather.
Weather conditions can still vary locally, particularly near the coast, and short-lived clouds or isolated precipitation cannot be ruled out solely from citywide observations.
For residents, the key takeaway is that the latest rain provided temporary relief rather than signalling a confirmed new widespread monsoon spell for Karachi.
The city’s rainfall should also be distinguished from the stronger weather activity forecast over several other regions of Pakistan, where thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls remain possible under the prevailing weather system.
