BNP to Request Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition from India After Win

Date:

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Web Desk: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a two-thirds majority in the recent general election, announced plans to formally seek the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a BNP party committee member and elected representative from Cox’s Bazar-1, told reporters outside the party headquarters in Dhaka that the party would press for Hasina’s return “in line with legal provisions.”

Ahmed added that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh and the Ministry of External Affairs of India. He stated that the BNP would request the Indian government to send Hasina back so she could face court proceedings.

Sheikh Hasina reportedly left for India in August 2024 following a popular uprising against her government. In November of the same year, a Dhaka court sentenced her to death in a case relating to crimes against humanity.

The BNP’s announcement signals a potential escalation in Bangladesh-India diplomatic engagement, as legal and political implications of the extradition request are expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
