Dhaka, Bangladesh — Web Desk: A video showing emotional scenes involving Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami election winner Barrister Ahmad bin Qasim Arman has gone viral on social media, after he visited the home of his defeated rival, BNP candidate Sanjida Akhtar, following the election.
According to international media reports, Barrister Arman, who won a parliamentary seat in Dhaka, met Sanjida Akhtar’s mother and paid tribute to her long struggle for justice for victims of enforced disappearances. Emotional moments were captured as the Jamaat-e-Islami leader embraced the rival candidate’s mother, reflecting shared personal tragedies linked to Bangladesh’s recent political history.
Arman is the son of Mir Qasim Ali, a senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader who was executed in 2016 under the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Arman himself was reportedly abducted and disappeared for eight years before being released following political changes in the country.
Sanjida Akhtar’s mother, who led the “Maayer Daak” (Mother’s Call) movement, campaigned for the return of political activists who disappeared during the previous government’s tenure. Her own son, Sajid Islam Suman, has been missing since 2013 and has not returned home.
The emotional visit highlighted shared pain across political divides, as Arman expressed solidarity with families affected by enforced disappearances and acknowledged the mother’s struggle for justice and accountability.
