Bangkok, Thailand – Web Desk: At least 27 people were killed and 25 others remain in critical condition after a massive fire tore through a bar in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district late Sunday night, Thai authorities said.
The blaze reportedly began near the stage of the venue before spreading rapidly, cutting off electricity and filling the building with thick smoke. Witnesses described scenes of panic as customers rushed toward the exits, while some became trapped inside the burning building.
Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and brought the blaze under control within about 30 minutes. Most of the victims were found inside a bathroom, where they had reportedly sought shelter from the flames and smoke.
Authorities said 73 people were injured, including 25 in critical condition. Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air-conditioning unit, although officials stressed that the exact cause will be determined after a full forensic investigation.
Initial investigations also indicate that smoke inhalation was the leading cause of death. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt said highly flammable ceiling decorations may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, while reports of people found near an emergency exit have raised concerns over possible evacuation obstacles.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said authorities would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy.
