Asad Qaiser clarifies ISI role in FATF bills during National Assembly debate

Date:

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: A heated exchange took place in Pakistan’s National Assembly after former Speaker Asad Qaiser responded to remarks made by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif regarding meetings involving the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

During the session, Asad Qaiser said that ISI officials were providing input on bills related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), including anti-money laundering legislation, as part of technical consultations.

He clarified that discussions were part of facilitation between the government and opposition during legislative proceedings, adding that the involvement of security officials was limited to advisory input on relevant bills.

Responding to Khawaja Asif’s earlier remarks about meetings held at his residence, Qaiser stated that the venue was in fact the Speaker’s official residence, not a personal home.

He further questioned the Defence Minister over the 8 February 2024 general elections and alleged political accountability, asking whether election results reflected what he described as a “moral burden.”

Qaiser also challenged Khawaja Asif to resign from his seat if he felt a moral burden, and to contest elections again to test public support.

The exchange highlighted ongoing political tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition benches amid debates over governance, elections, and institutional roles.
