Airfares Surge as Jet Fuel Prices Soar Worldwide

Date:

Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Air travel costs have surged sharply after a steep increase in jet fuel prices, forcing airlines to raise fares and pass the financial burden on to passengers.

Industry sources say jet fuel prices have jumped significantly, rising from Rs176 to over Rs417 per litre, marking a substantial increase that has directly impacted airline operating costs. As fuel remains one of the largest expenses for carriers, airlines have responded by increasing fuel surcharges and overall ticket prices.

Several airlines have introduced additional fuel surcharges ranging from $10 to $100 on domestic and international routes. While base fares have largely remained unchanged, the higher surcharges have pushed total ticket prices significantly upward.

Domestic travel has been particularly affected, with one-way fares between major cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore reaching as high as Rs40,000. In some cases, last-minute or “chance” tickets have seen increases of up to 150%, with fares exceeding Rs50,000.

Pakistan’s national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines, has imposed a $10 fuel surcharge on domestic flights. Additional charges include up to $100 on Canada routes, $75 on UK-bound flights, and around $50 on routes to Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries.

Private airlines have also followed suit, introducing surcharges ranging from $15 to $150 depending on the route and demand.

International travel costs have risen sharply as well, with economy-class tickets to destinations in the Middle East, Europe, and North America now ranging between Rs300,000 and Rs700,000.

Airline officials attribute the surge in prices to rising global fuel costs and disruptions in regional airspace, particularly in the Gulf, which have increased operational challenges and flight durations.

Analysts warn that if fuel prices remain elevated, airfares could rise further, adding pressure on travelers and potentially reducing passenger demand in the coming months.
