Govt, PTI Trade Warnings Ahead of September 27 Islamabad March
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Tensions between the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have intensified ahead of the party’s planned September 27 march on Islamabad, following an escalating exchange of warnings between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
The latest confrontation centres on Naqvi’s remarks about dealing with security challenges “once and for all” and Afridi’s response during proceedings of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. According to reporting by The Express Tribune and Dawn, Afridi said the Pakistani public would ultimately decide matters “once and for all” and linked his remarks to the planned September 27 mobilisation.
Afridi also alleged that PTI leaders and lawmakers were being targeted ahead of the protest and criticised recent actions involving party representatives. His accusations represent PTI’s position and have not all been independently established.
The KP chief minister said PTI intended to remain peaceful, but he also warned of serious consequences if force were used against demonstrators. Dawn reported that Afridi cautioned that future generations might respond differently if political disputes were addressed through violence.
The federal government, meanwhile, has issued its own warnings over the planned march. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said peaceful citizens could come to Islamabad but warned that anyone engaging in violence or illegal activity would face action. Authorities have also stepped up preparations around entry points to the federal capital.
Earlier, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government preferred a peaceful and legal resolution but had “other options” if PTI proceeded with the march. PTI says the mobilisation is intended to press for the release of its founder, former prime minister Imran Khan.
Separate Tribune reporting says authorities have reinforced security around Islamabad ahead of the demonstration, including preparations at major entry routes and requests for additional personnel.
Rhetoric from some PTI figures has also intensified. KP PTI president Junaid Akbar warned the government against using force during the march and made strongly worded remarks about how supporters could respond. Those statements are political warnings by PTI figures and should not be interpreted as established plans for violence.
The confrontation has turned September 27 into a major test for both sides, with PTI pressing ahead with its mobilisation and the federal authorities preparing to maintain security in Islamabad. The extent of participation and how the protest unfolds remain uncertain.
