US, Denmark and Greenland Set to Sign Arctic Security Deal

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The United States, Denmark and Greenland are set to sign a new security agreement in New York on Tuesday that would significantly expand the American military presence on the strategically important Arctic island while leaving Danish sovereignty formally intact.

The agreement is expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly by US President Donald Trump and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland, following months of diplomatic tensions over Washington’s ambitions in the Arctic.

Under the planned arrangement, the United States is expected to establish military facilities at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Mestersvig on the east coast, supplementing its existing operations at Pituffik Space Base. Reuters reported that Narsarsuaq previously hosted a US Cold War-era installation, while Mestersvig is currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

The deal would represent the most significant expansion of the American military footprint in Greenland since the Cold War era. The United States once operated numerous military facilities across the island but currently maintains its principal permanent presence at Pituffik.

Danish officials have emphasised that the agreement places Arctic security within a broader NATO framework rather than transferring sovereignty over Greenland to Washington. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said NATO members share responsibility for security in the Arctic.

President Trump has described the agreement differently, saying it would give the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security requirements. Denmark, however, has not endorsed that interpretation. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said the arrangement recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

That distinction is significant. The available details do not indicate that Greenland is being transferred to the United States or that Denmark is surrendering sovereignty over the territory. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

The agreement follows a prolonged dispute triggered by Trump’s repeated interest in acquiring Greenland. Earlier proposals and statements from the US president drew opposition from both Copenhagen and Nuuk, while European governments publicly backed Greenland’s territorial integrity and right to determine its own future.

The Arctic has assumed greater strategic importance as the United States and its NATO allies focus on security, shipping routes and critical resources across the region. Greenland’s geographic position between North America and Europe makes it particularly important for missile warning, surveillance and wider Arctic defence.

Important details remain unresolved publicly. Reuters reported that the full agreement had not yet been published, leaving uncertainty over precisely how the new arrangement interacts with the existing 1951 defence framework governing the US military presence in Greenland.
