PTI Says Imran Khan’s Two Sisters, Family Members Detained in Lahore
LAHORE, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said early Monday that two more sisters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, along with some of their children and other family members, had been detained by Punjab Police in Lahore, a day after authorities placed his sister Aleema Khan in 30-day detention.
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram alleged that Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi, along with their children and sons of Aleema Khan, had been taken into custody. He claimed they were placed in an armoured police vehicle and taken to an undisclosed location. Dawn separately reported the same allegations, citing Akram and PTI statements.
As of the reports reviewed on Monday morning, the detention of these additional family members was being reported as a PTI allegation, and the available sources did not contain a detailed Punjab Police response confirming the identities, legal grounds or location of all those allegedly detained.
Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan also alleged on social media that his aunts Uzma and Noreen had been taken away. He claimed authorities entered relatives’ homes and that the family had not been told where those detained were being taken. These statements remain claims by family members and PTI representatives.
The development follows the detention of Aleema Khan in Lahore on Sunday. Unlike Monday’s additional allegations, Aleema’s detention has been officially documented. Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz ordered her detention for 30 days under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, and police sources confirmed that she was transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
According to the detention order reported by Dawn, authorities cited public-safety and public-order concerns and referred to police reports concerning Aleema’s alleged involvement in roadblocks and protests linked to the events of May 9, 2023. Aleema has the right to make a representation to the provincial government against the detention order.
The developments come days before PTI’s planned September 27 countrywide protest and march towards Islamabad. The party says the mobilisation is intended to press for Imran Khan’s release and what it describes as the supremacy of the Constitution.
Reuters reported on Sunday that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the government would take necessary measures to prevent the planned protest. PTI representatives, meanwhile, have condemned Aleema’s detention and the reported detention of other family members.
Because Monday’s reports about Uzma, Noreen and other relatives were still developing, further confirmation from Punjab authorities could clarify the number of people detained, their whereabouts and the legal basis for any detention.
