Israeli media reports say Mossad chief Roman Gofman removed two senior officials linked to an alleged plan to overthrow Iran’s government.
TEL AVIV, Israel — WEB DESK: Israel’s new Mossad chief Roman Gofman has removed two senior intelligence officials from their positions amid reports that they were closely involved in an alleged plan to bring about regime change in Iran, Israeli media reported.
According to Israel’s Channel 12, the two officials played central roles in developing the operational strategy for a plan aimed at weakening Iran’s Islamic Republic and encouraging an uprising against the government.
One of the officials had served as head of Mossad’s intelligence directorate since December, while the other reportedly led the agency’s Iran division.
Alleged plan focused on Kurdish groups
Channel 12 reported that the officials had prepared a written operational plan involving Iran’s ethnic and linguistic minorities, particularly Kurdish groups.
The reported strategy envisioned Israeli airstrikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps positions near the Iran-Iraq border and in Iranian Kurdistan. The objective was allegedly to create conditions for Kurdish fighters to enter northwestern Iran and encourage an anti-government uprising.
According to the report, Israeli planners expected thousands of young Kurds to join the movement, potentially triggering wider protests that could eventually spread toward Tehran.
The report also claimed that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been considered as a possible political figure to return to power.
Alleged US involvement
Channel 12 reported that the proposal was discussed in the context of efforts by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to persuade US President Donald Trump to support military action against Iran.
The report further claimed that some elements of the strategy were partially implemented during the early stages of the conflict, when Israeli and US forces reportedly targeted security facilities, military bases, missile installations, police centers and Basij positions in northwestern Iran.
However, according to the report, the United States eventually withdrew its support for the broader plan following leaks, diplomatic intervention by Turkey and reluctance among Kurdish groups.
Changes inside Mossad
Channel 12 also reported that Gofman had disagreements with the two officials from the beginning.
However, the report said their departure from the positions should not be characterized as dismissals. Instead, security sources reportedly described the changes as mutually agreed decisions linked to wider organizational reforms within Mossad.
The two officials are expected to remain within the agency in different roles.
Claims remain unverified
The reports come amid continuing scrutiny of Israeli and US intelligence assessments regarding Iran’s political stability and military capabilities.
Several claims concerning the alleged regime-change operation, including the reported role of Kurdish groups and the proposal involving Ahmadinejad, could not be independently verified.
Neither the Israeli government nor Mossad has publicly confirmed the central details of the reported plan. Iranian authorities have also not officially commented on most of the allegations.
The developments highlight the continuing debate over the feasibility of attempts to influence Iran’s political structure through military pressure, covert operations and opposition movements.
