Rubio Warns Iran Will Pay a Heavy Price Under Trump’s Policy

Date:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that Iran will face increasingly severe consequences if current tensions continue, saying President Donald Trump’s policy is based on a principle of strong retaliation.

MANILA, Philippines – Web Desk: Speaking to reporters in Manila, Rubio said the United States had honored its commitments in previous negotiations with Iran, but claimed Tehran was currently unwilling to finalize a new agreement. He added that Iran could reconsider its position in the coming days but cautioned that continued escalation would come at a “heavy price.”

Rubio also alleged that Iranian officials continue to seek direct and indirect communication regarding a potential agreement with Washington. He criticized Iran’s leadership, claiming the country has the potential to become one of the wealthiest nations in the Middle East but accused its ruling establishment of prioritizing support for regional armed groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, over economic development.

Commenting on the conflict in the Red Sea, Rubio said Iran had drawn the Houthis into the broader regional confrontation and expressed hope that attacks by the group would cease.

On US-Saudi relations, Rubio described Saudi Arabia as a key strategic partner and said a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Riyadh would be reasonable. He noted that any such agreement would include strict safeguards and require approval from the US Congress.

Rubio also reiterated Washington’s opposition to the International Criminal Court (ICC), stating that the United States is not a member and does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction over US citizens.

Addressing the Russia-Ukraine war, Rubio said the conflict had caused immense bloodshed and suffering, particularly for Ukraine, adding that the United States remains prepared to play a constructive role in efforts to end the war.

He also said Washington seeks stable and positive relations with China, emphasizing the importance of continued diplomatic engagement.
